There was a recent expose from Dr. Oz regarding Healthy BBQ. Dr. Oz revealed that Barbecuing low-and-slow is much Healthier than we all thought. It softens the collagen in meat and actually melts away the unhealthy fats creating a succulent, juicy piece of meat. But why ruin it with store bought BBQ Sauce? He revealed that Bottled BBQ sauce can have as much sugar as 21 donuts!

Be in control of what’s going in your food and your body by making BBQ sauce from scratch.

The old saying is, “Anything is always better when it’s homemade.” This statement is most true when it comes to condiments. Homemade ketchup, mustard, ranch, or any other dipping sauce can make or break a main dish. Homemade sauces add so much more complexity to what you are serving, and they are perfect for impressing company. What is the point of having chicken tenders, but having nothing delicious to dip them in? BBQ sauce is so versatile to make homemade because you can also marinade and cook with it. You can adjust the spice to fit your own individual tastes.

This is how I like my BBQ sauce:

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 Vidalia onion, minced finely

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 cup ketchup

A few dashes of Worcestershire

½ cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons chili powder

4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes

Salt and pepper to taste

Start with a saucepan on medium heat. Add your oil and onions. Sweat the onions until translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add your garlic and stir, again until fragrant. Add ketchup, Worcestershire, brown sugar, chili powder and vinegar and stir to combine.

Bring the sauce to a low boil for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Turn the heat down to low. Add crushed red pepper flakes and season to taste. Be sure to taste the sauce at this stage to ensure you have the correct seasoning. It is important here to not over-salt because the sauce is going to cook down and concentrate. You can always add more salt later, but not remove it!

Cook in the saucepan on low for about 45 minutes until thick and delicious. Taste one more time to check for seasoning and add more spice as necessary.

My favorite way to serve this BBQ sauce is basted onto ribs on the grill. I like to use baby back pork ribs. Just simply season the raw meat liberally with salt and pepper and toss it on the cool part of the grill. Cook with the lid closed, turning and basting with your homemade bbq sauce every 30 minutes until the meat is almost falling off the bone. Low and Slow Ribs with Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe

Remove the ribs from the heat and tent with tin foil for about 10 minutes. After, give the ribs one more healthy basting of sauce. Make sure the ribs are completely coated. Slice the ribs into two-rib pieces and lay out on your platter.

To further reduce your intake for raw sugar, try replacing it with molasses or honey, or reduce the amounts further to taste.
