Now is the time to stock up on pantry items that the kids will love when you Barbecue. Kids enjoy the fun family and friends aspect of a Barbecue. The more you involve them the better.

It’s a great way to encourage your kids to eat more vegetables. Many kids will turn up their noses when faced with a plate of vegetables on the dining table. Barbecue those vegetables and if they are old enough, encourage them to cook them. They will surprise you at how they will enjoy what they have Barbecued.

Kids love savory food and will often choose it over sweet items. Mini kid-friendly portions attractively presented will have excited kids filling their tummies. Think mini hamburgers, mini hot dogs, mini pita pockets and even mini skewers with either vegetables, meats or grilled fresh fruit.

Suggested foods to serve for kids at a Barbecue.

Corn on the cob:–grill on the barbecue. Serve with plain butter or even a sweet barbecue sauce. Cut corn cobs in small pieces for kids to handle.

Barbecue Fun for KidsSkewers:–These are perfect for a Barbecue. They are useful to prepare in advance and will usually cook quickly on a barbecue. They are also perfect small chunks of vegetables or meat make it easier for kids to eat.

Burgers/Sliders:–this is an ideal way to get your kids to eat more vegetables. Make homemade mini patties with extra vegetables. For those families who are vegetarian makeup soy patties including extra vegetable. Serve the patties in mini buns. Even allow the kids to put their own toppings on the sliders i.e. cheese, sauce, onions or crunchy coleslaw. How about a pizza burger?

Recipe simple chicken burgers with veggies

800 grams of chicken mince

½ cup finely chopped onion

½ cup celery, finely diced

½ cup grated carrot

In a bowl combine all the ingredients and season. This should make 10 patties. If the patties are a little moist, then add a 1/3 rd cup of fresh breadcrumbs.

Refrigerate for about an hour.

Cook on the barbecue for 5 minutes for each side.

Once cooked place in a small bun and garnish with lettuce and tomato and sweet chili sauce.

 

Mini Pizza’s:–Kids will love making up their own pizza toppings. Allow them to flatten the pizza dough into any shape and then choose their own toppings. Perfect for a barbecue pizza oven party!

Grilled Tofu:- just throw the tofu on the grill and brush it with a sauce that kids will love.

Quesadillas: Quick and easy crowd favorite. Place the filling onto the tortilla flatbread. Fold over and enclose in tin foil. Gently heat over the barbecue until the filling is warm. (it should melt any cheese. Once the tin foil has cooled slightly allow the kids to open and eat their own personal quesadilla.

Salads:- most kids are not keen on the traditional lettuce salad. however, provide a crunchy coleslaw or a pasta salad and you get that kid nod of approval.

Kid-Friendly Coleslaw that all kids will love

1/3 head of cabbage, chopped or shredded

2 carrots shredded

1 apple cut into small pieces

1 Tablespoon squeezed lemon juice

1/3 Cup of mayonnaise (use vegan mayonnaise to make the dish vegan-friendly)

2 Teaspoons of apple cider vinegar

1/2 cup of  raisins

Salt to taste

Place the shredded cabbage and carrots in a large mixing bowl.  In another bowl, add diced apple and lemon juice; toss well and add to cabbage and carrots.

Mix in the mayonnaise and cider vinegar. Mix well.

Add in the raisins mixing again.

Refrigerate for at least an hour to help the flavors blend.

 

Kids love this Pasta Salad ( and it’s good for them)

1 Pkt 250 gm pasta (Choose an unusual shape like bows or screws).

1 Cup of chopped frozen vegetables

½ cup of corn

11/2 Tablespoons of olive oil

1 Teaspoon Honey

1/3 Bright Red Pepper

¼ tsp of mild mustard ( not powder)

Cook the pasta in boiling water

About five minutes before the end add the frozen vegetables.

Drain the pasta and run under cold water

In a large bowl add in the pasta corn and peppers.

Separately mix the olive oil, honey, mustard, and seasoning.

Pour over the pasta and mix well.

Fresh Fruit Skewers;- Place cubes of fresh fruit onto skewers and serve to the kids. Watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, grapes, apple etc work the best. Not only do they look attractive but they are healthy for the kids.

Barbecued Bananas:- Place banana in their skins on the barbecue. Chop the ends off. Turn. Leave to blacken for approx. 15 minutes. Let cool for a while remove the skins and serve with ice cream.

Barbecue Themed Parties

This is a great themed party for kids of all ages. Where appropriate kids can even barbecue their own food under supervision. Kids love to be treated like adults and they will have fun grilling the food they will eat.

Barbecue parties also have the advantage of keeping the mess outdoors. With the addition of outdoor games, this will become an event your kid will remember.

Consider adding a further theme to these barbecue parties. Try a farm theme. Serve food from red gingham tableclothed tables. Place bales of hay around for seating. Stack pre-cut vegetable fingers in small punnets, place bowls of corn on the cob on the table.Place baby apples in a basket.
